February – National Children’s Dental Health Month

Nevada Oral Health Program challenges Nevadans to swap sugary drinks for ‘Water, Nature's Drink!’

Carson City February 18, 2021

The Nevada Oral Health Program (NOHP), in partnership with the American Dental Association is proud to bring the 2021 National Children’s Dental Health Month campaign slogan “Water, Nature’s Drink!” to life with the Sip N Flip 4 NV Kids Challenge. This month-long social media campaign #sipNflip4NVkids is designed to challenge Nevada’s children to post a video of themselves sharing why they choose water over sugary drinks while taking the Sip & Flip challenge.

Dr. Antonina Capurro, Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, State Dental Health Officer said, “Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions in the United States. Considering that 65% of third-grade students in Nevada have experienced tooth decay, the earlier we educate our children on better choices that produce oral health, the better. Children’s Dental Health Month offers an opportunity to discuss the importance of oral health in early development and allows us to creatively engage with children and their families to encourage healthy nutritional choices and establish daily oral hygiene habits.”

Governor Steve Sisolak has declared February Children’s Dental Health Month in Nevada. The Nevada Oral Health Program is proud to support this annual health observance bringing together thousands of dedicated professionals, health care providers, and educators to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers, parents, and all of our communities.

“We have had a tremendous response from our community partners across the state and are looking forward to interacting with more children and families,” said Jessica Woods, Interim State Dental Hygienist with the Oral Health Program.

In addition to the #sipNflip4NVkids challenge, the Nevada Oral Health Program, in partnership with Three Square, Colgate, Future Smiles, and Liberty Dental Plan, will distribute oral hygiene kits and education resources to more than 500 children on Feb. 25 at the Elaine Wynn Elementary School.
