On
January 28, 2008, Richard Whitley assumed duties as the Administrator of the
Nevada State Health Division, headquartered in Carson City, Nevada. As
Administrator, he is directly responsible for promoting and protecting the
health of all Nevadans and visitors to the state through proactive
leadership in public health initiatives, coupled with enforcement of the
public health laws and regulations. The responsibilities also involve
aggressive measures as may be necessary to prevent the spread of sickness
and disease through surveillance, intervention, and education, to include
public health preparedness. The Health Division Administrator also serves as
Secretary to the Nevada State Board of Health.
Statewide, the Nevada State Health Division strives to control the spread of
communicable diseases, seeks to lower the incidence of preventable diseases
and injuries, along with collection and analysis of injuries, illness and
death in Nevada. The Division is guided by the State Board of Health and
consists of six Bureaus, employs more than 600 full-time and temporary
employees, and has an annual budget of $160 million.
Richard holds a baccalaureate degree from Willamette University, Oregon and
a Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology from Oregon State
University.
