Today, the Division of Health Care Financing and Policy has announced that Nevada Medicaid Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Administrator Phillip Burrell has been competitively selected as one of 20 participants in the inaugural class of the Medicaid Pathways Program.
“I’m honored to take part in the Medicaid Pathways Program,” said Deputy Administrator Burrell. “This is a best-in-class leadership program. I’m excited to learn with other state colleagues and bring tools and resources back to Nevada that will help us achieve the mission, visions, and better represent the diversity of people who use Nevada Medicaid.”
This Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Training Initiative, led by the Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS), offers an opportunity for senior Medicaid staff who are new to Medicaid leadership to develop their skills to advance in their roles.
“Phil is an incredible asset to the Nevada Medicaid program. He is an innovative thinker who is managing one of, if not the single largest budget in the state. He demonstrates strong leadership skills that will be further developed through participation in this program,” said Nevada Medicaid Administrator Suzanne Bierman.
During the nine-month-long program, participants will gain skills by following a competency-based leadership framework, engaging in coaching sessions, exploring best practices in Medicaid leadership, and implementing a leadership project. In addition to serving as Deputy Administrator at Nevada Medicaid, Deputy Administrator Burrell is currently finishing a Doctorate in Population Health Studies at Thomas Jefferson University and serves on the board for the Industry Advisory Council at Lehigh University. Before joining Nevada Medicaid, he served as director for the Pennsylvania Hospital Association where he led efforts in health policy and advocacy for more than 250 hospitals and health systems. He holds a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from Texas State University, a Master’s in Healthcare Systems Engineering from Lehigh University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Trinity University.
