Be a Hero and Wear a Cape for Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month

Be A Hero 5K Fun Run & Walk & Family Resource Fair to Help Children in Rural Nevada

Carson City, NV April 03, 2023

Lace up your sneakers and break a sweat to help children in Rural Nevada. The Division of Child and Family Services, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Carson City, and other Carson City organizations are partnering for the inaugural Be A Hero 5K Fun Run & Walk & Family Resource Fair, April 29, at Riverview Park, 600 Marsh Road in Carson City. The event will raise awareness for National Child Abuse Prevention Month, which is celebrated every April.

Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome at the Carson City 5K. The cost is $30 and includes an event t-shirt and breakfast snacks. Participants may wear a cape or their favorite superhero outfit to signal their fight against child abuse. The person in the best-voted outfit will win a prize.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Runners will start the race at 10 a.m. and walkers will start at 10:30 a.m. The course is a level, graded dirt loop, near nature and away from crowds.

The fun race registration deadline is April 13. Registration details are here.

“In honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Be A Hero 5K Fun Run & Walk & Family Resource Fair will connect families to resources that help them thrive,” said Nevada’s rural foster care recruiter Shelby Riley, LSW. “Services are available to Rural Nevada families who may be struggling and just need some help.”

The need for critical family support services in Rural Nevada is especially high.

Division of Child and Family Services reports that Rural Nevada child welfare offices received 4,000 reports of suspected child abuse and neglect in 2022 and investigated over 600 of those reports.

Event proceeds benefit CASA of Carson City, a nonprofit comprised mostly of community volunteers whose mission is to support and promote court-appointed advocacy so that every abused or neglected child can be safe, establish permanence and have the opportunity to thrive.

A free Family Resource Fair will be at the event from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m.
